Tomato is a much loved vegetable all over the world. It belongs to the plant family called Solanaceae and is a hairy, upright or creeping, tropical herb or vine. It grows wild in some places, but Generally it is cultivated in vegetable gardens, as a field crop or in green houses. The leaves are very irregular in shape. The small yellow flowers, sometimes in clusters, produce a berry, which turns red when it's ripe. This berry is the edible tomato, which finds it's place in almost every home, Vegetable market or in departmental stores after it has been turned in pulp and preserved as ketchup in bottles or jars.

Medicinal uses

  • Prevents scurvy, has a soothing effect, is antitoxic, disinfectant, lexative and tonic.
  • Constipation, scrofula or tuberculosis of the lymph glands in the neck, neuritis or inflammation of a nerve, liver problems, mental strain, arthritis, polyneuritis or inflammation of several nerves, rheumatism and indigestion.
  • Burns, sunburns, insect bites, piles, tumours, swollen eyes, warts, corns and wounds.
  • Soothing poultice for inflammations in general.
  • Tonsillitis and throat inflammations.
  • Nephritis or inflammatory diseases of the kidney.

How to use

  • The consumption of tomato prevents scurvy, has a soothing effect on the body, is antitoxic, disinfectant, laxative, and tonic.
  • Tomatoes , when fully ripe, are recommended for constipation, scrofula or tuberculosis of the lymph glands in the neck, neuritis, liver problems, mental strain, arthritis, polyneuritis or inflammation of several nerves, rheumatism and indigestion. It Should be eaten in abundance but not mixed with starch.
  • Externally used, the ripe tomatoes are applied directly over Burns, sunburns, insect bites, piles, tumours, swollen eyes, warts, corns and wounds.
  • The pounded leaves are used as a soothing and softening poultice for inflammations.
  • The juice of the green tomato makes a good gargle for tonsillitis and general inflammation of the throat.
  • The juice of the ripe fruit mixed with celery juice is recommended for nephritis or diseases of the kidney inflammation. For this take 2 or 3 cups a day.

Dose

 

Normal Dosage For:

Adults: 
4 or 5 cups a day.

Children: 
Aged 10 to 15 years: 3-4 cups a day.
Aged 6 to 9 years: 2 cups a day.
Aged 2 to 5 years: 1 cup a day.
1 to 2 years: 1 cup a day.
Below 1 year: 1 or less cups a day.
