Mono Lake, California
Mono Lake is an ancient saline lake, which is close to Yosemite National Park, and is twice as salty as any ocean. This so-called inland sea was formed more than 760000 years ago as a terminal lake. The most striking thing that you will witness in this spot is the manner in which the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountains mirror in the water during clear days. If you are lucky, you will be able to spot a lot of wildlife here. Wild horses also roam the nearby meadows, which is a treat for sore eyes.
Lady Bird Lake, Austin
It is a river-like reservoir on the Colorado River in Austin, and is famous for its musical connections. It was created as a cooling pond for a power plant in 1960, and was later renamed after the wife of former president Lyndon B Johnson, Claudia ‘Lady Bird’ Johnson. During summers, scores of joggers and walkers move along the lakeside paths, and one can indulge in activities, such as kayaking and water biking.
Avalanche Lake, Montana
Located in Glacier National Park, the lake is surrounded by majestic mountains and forested shores, whereas the Rocky Mountains can be seen in the scene, more like a scene straight out of a picture postcard. It got its name, Avalanche, as it's prone to avalanches during the winters. If you are lucky enough to get to the Avalanche Lake soon after the trail opens in May, i.e., when the weather is moderately warm, you will be treated to the sounds and sights of many avalanches, and will be able to witness them up close like never before. During early summer and spring, these avalanches turn numerous waterfalls that cascade down from the highest peaks.
Yellowstone Lake, Wyoming
The vast Yellowstone Lake is the largest water body in North America, and the second largest in the world. The primary highlight of this lake is that it remains strikingly beautiful all-round the year, and freezes completely during the winter. The Yellowstone National Park geothermal springs borders the lake. As per a recent research, if the water of this lake is drained, it would likely reveal hot springs, canyons, and geysers, similar to those that are found elsewhere in the park. Here, you get to see a variety of wildlife such as bear cubs, baby bison, bighorn lambs, elk calves, and much more.
Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada
Whichever time of the year you plan to visit this spot, the beauty of Lake Tahoe will blow you away. One can find several towns around the lake, the main ones being Tahoe City, South Lake Tahoe, and Incline Village. If you visit this spot during the winters, you can hit the slopes; summers are perfect for watersports here.
